The 1881 census is fully indexed and provides a complete and reasonably accurate distribution of the name across the country for this period. For the purposes of this family history survey family groups were used. This removes the problems of large families distorting the survey and provides a reasonably accurate reflection of spread. For our purposes a family group, is a group of CULPINs living together in the same house. People who were living as servants or lodgers in other households are counted a separate culpin family. Note that many of these individuals may have their own real family nearby - our statistics are therefore an overestimate of the true situation. Many counties show only a few occurrences, many of these were people or family groups that had the Head of Household born in another county, very often Northants (or Rutland). Additionally we have used all similar spellings, including the CULPAN variation popular in the West Riding. The overall distribution follows similar patterns to those shown by the IGI analysis. There appears to be two centres for the name CULPIN or CULPAN. One is based in the Rockingham forest area of Rutland and Northwest Northamptonshire and one in the Calderdale area of the West Riding. The later uses the spelling CULPAN extensively. For the name CULPIN the spread indicates the highest proportion of occurrences appearing to come from within the three counties of Northamptonshire, Rutland and Lincolnshire. Even within these areas, distribution is restricted to small areas - the very southern part of Lincolnshire and the very Northern part of Northamptonshire (the area known as the Soke of Peterborough, and the Woodnewton area) as well as the County of Rutland.
