Although
by no means a complete collection of baptisms and births the
IGI does provide extensive coverage of the Country. It has been
used here to chart the occurrences of the CULPIN name through
three centuries from tudor times. Even though this survey is
far from complete, there is no evidence that it is a biased
sample. For family history purposes, the evidence shows the
name developing from essentially two centres, West Yorkshire
and the Rutland Northamptonshire border. Where the CULPIN name
appears in other areas from very early it either does not survive
or the families are temporary residents. |

The
1881 census is one of the most complete coverages of the country
in Victorian times. This has been used to study the distribution
of the two main name variants, CULPIN and CULPAN. In this
study we have used family groups as the main calculation unit.
This study
also supports the proposition that the name developed from
two sources.
